Soledad O'Brien heads to HBO for Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel (videos)

Journalist Soledad O'Brien may be a familiar face to CNN's "Black in America" but she is soon to expand her audience. HBO announced on June 12, 2013, that the award winning journalist will move to HBO and join the show "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel."

HBO Sports president Ken Hershman released a statement regarding the move. He stated, "Soledad is a perfect fit for Real Sports. She’s an extraordinary interviewer and storyteller, and we’re thrilled to be able to add her to a franchise where the emphasis is on finding and presenting thought-provoking stories in the diverse and ever-fascinating world of sports.”

Not only is O'Brien an accomplished journalist, but she is also CEO of the production company Starfish Media Group. She describes the company on Twitter as, "We produce docs, scripted and non scripted series, and MOWs for CNN and others."

Through her deal with HBO, O'Brien will provide HBO with "first dibs" so to speak, regarding new scripts and programming ideas.

Bryant Gumbel released a statement regarding the deal. He stated, "Soledad’s a respected journalist with a proven track record. Her credibility, broad interests and passion make her a wonderful addition to our program. I’m thrilled to have her on our Real Sports team."

Additionally, O'Brien spoke about the new deal. She expressed, "HBO is undeniably a leader in meaningful storytelling in a wide array of formats. I’m honored to join the Real Sports team and look forward to continuing my fervor for uncovering unique and impactful stories.”
